刘建华，1962年出生于中国吉安，现居上海。1989年毕业于江西景德镇陶瓷学院（现景德镇陶瓷大学）。自2004年起，担任上海大学上海美术学院教授。主要个展包括《刘建华——形而上器》（中国上海复星艺术中心，2022年）、《刘建华》（美国帕罗奥图佩斯画廊，2019年）等。主要群展包括第14届光州双年展（韩国，2023年）、第57届威尼斯双年展（意大利，2017年）、奥能登国际艺术节（日本，2017年）等。主要收藏机构包括蓬皮杜艺术中心、泰特现代美术馆、纽约现代艺术博物馆等。
八十年代末他尝试在当代背景下进行实验性的工作。2008年提出 “无意义、无内容” 的理念进行创作，开始了一个全新方向的探索，并形成了当代艺术的个人语言体系。是中国当代艺术领域最具实验性、代表性的艺术家之一。
Born 1962 in Ji’an (China), lives and works in Shanghai. Liu Jianhua graduated in 1989 from the currently known as Jingdezhen Ceramics University. He has been an professor at the Shanghai University Academy of Fine Arts since 2004. Recent solo exhibitions include Liu Jianhua: Metaphysical Objects (Fosun Foundation Shanghai, Shanghai, 2022) and Liu Jianhua (Pace Gallery, Palo Alto, USA, 2019), with major group exhibitions including the 14th Gwangju Biennale (Korea, 2023), the 57th Venice Biennale (Italy, 2017) and the Oku-Noto Triennale (Japan, 2017). His works are in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, Tate Modern, and Museum of Modern Art, New York, among many others.
Since late 1980s, he started his experimental practices under the contemporary context. In 2008, he shifted his focus to “no meaning, no content”, which declared the fairly new exploration, and therefore has developed his own system of expression for contemporary art. Liu Jianhua is one of China’s best-known contemporary artists who experiment with comprehensive materials.
