向阳，生于1967年，90年代初自中国中央工艺美术学院（现清华大学艺术学院）毕业，后在中国艺术研究院进修，于90年代末赴美继续艺术创作。 曾于纽约艺术与设计博物馆，费城佩德布莱德艺术中心，澳大利亚国家博物馆，圣路易斯 LUMINARY 艺术中心，以及北京中国美术馆、今日美术馆，英国杜伦大学等艺术机构展出其装置等艺术创作。2010受上海世博城市未来馆邀约创作大型作品 《和谐塔》。在公共艺术创作方面，2015年中英文化年，艺术项目《非常建筑-东方遇见西方》于伦敦泰晤士河上巡游展出。2018年参与越后妻有大地艺术祭，以及2019年、2022年濑户内国际艺术节。
向阳的作品结合中国传统哲学，宗教思想，艺术及工艺于一身，以崭新素材形态融合西方当代艺术批判思维。在美国多年的生活经历，将向阳置身于东西方文化交汇点，以局内/局外人的多重身份体会看似矛盾之中显现的统一性，通过艺术探讨生存的矛盾及意念状态之间的关系。其作品为英国杜伦大学、中国美术馆、今日美术馆等机构永久收藏。艺术家现工作居住于北京和纽约。
Xiang Yang (Chinese, b.1967) was born and raised in China and moved to the United States in 1998. He received his B.A. degree in mural painting at Central Academy of Design and Fine Arts of China in 1991, and continued his study in Graduate School of China Art Academy in 1994. Xiang Yang has exhibited works at venues including Museum of Art and Design (NYC), Painted Bride Art Center (Philadelphia), Art Alliance (Philadelphia), Today Art Museum and National Art Museum of China (Beijing). His large-scale work, Harmony Tower, was commissioned for Future Pavilion, EXPO 2010, Shanghai. In 2015, his art project Ultra Architecture – East Meets West has sailed and exhibited on the River Thames, London. Since 2018, Xiang Yang has participated in the major art festivals in Japan such as Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and Setouchi Triennale.
Xiang Yang’s work synthesizes the traditions of China: philosophy and religious thought, art and craft, with a new range of material, form, and critical thought encountered in contemporary Western art practice. And his works are in the permanent collection of many institutions including Durham University, National Art Museum of China, Today Art Museum, etc. Xiang Yang currently lives and works in Beijing and New York.
