Oron Catts & Ionat Zurr established Tissue Culture & Art (TC&A) in 1996. The Project is a pioneering collaboration that explores how tissue engineering can be used as a medium for artistic expression. For over twenty years the TC&A Project has developed artworks and performances, curated exhibitions, written and edited essays and books, throughout the world, that focus on the impact of biotechnologies such as tissue engineering and synthetic biology on society. Their projects have dealt with lab-grown food, tissue engineered leather, semi-living sculptures and the changing relationship with the concept of life and between humans and nonhumans.
The artwork of the TC&A Project have been exhibited and collected by institutions such as Ars Electronica; Pompidou Centre; MoMA, NY; Mori Art Museum; National Art Museum of China; NGV; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and more.
Oron Catts is the Director and co-founder of SymbioticA (Est. 2000), The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Human Sciences, The University of Western Australia. Under Catts’ leadership SymbioticA won the inaugural Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Hybrid Art (2007) and other awards. Dr. Ionat Zurr is the chair of Fine Art Discipline at the School of Design and the Academic Coordinator of SymbioticA, School of Human Sciences, both at the University of Western Australia. Catts and Zurr were Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School, visiting Scholars at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University, Visiting Professors at the School of Art, Design and Architecture, Aalto University, Helsinki. Catts was a Visiting Professor and a Professor at Large in Contestable Design at the Royal College of Arts, London.
