隋建国，1956年生于山东省青岛市，1984年毕业于山东艺术学院美术系，获得学士学位，1989年毕业于中央美术学院雕塑系，获得硕士学位，现为中央美术学院雕塑系主任。他被评论家誉为 “在观念主义方向上走得最早也最远的中国雕塑家”。
隋建国在艺术探索中对创作观念、作品形式、媒介选择、处理方法、时空经验等多个方面都有独特的理解和认识。他的雕塑将观念与形式巧妙地结合在一起，作品多以大的尺度感给人以感官上的冲击力。隋建国早期的雕塑作品带有很强的符号性，这些符号大多与社会、历史的特殊记忆密切相关。随后，他的创作逐渐抛离了个体的身份，创作进入了更为宏观的视角，从中可以看到一种对时间与空间概念的文化探索。同时，隋建国也成功地将雕塑带入一个全面反省中国现代性的艺术实践中。无论是早期的现实主义作品，还是后来创作的 “中山装”、“恐龙” 等经典形象，都是在中国本土的知识谱系和文化经络中寻找问题和解决问题的途径与方式，具有明显的知识分子气质，流露出严肃的社会批判立场和人文道德指向。此外他的创作还涉及影像、公共行为等领域。
艺术家曾多次参加群展和个展，其中包括2012年佩斯北京的 “隋建国” 个展，2011年荷兰海牙雕塑美术馆的 “海牙天下”、2010年法国巴黎JGM画廊的 “梦之石”、并且还参与2010年上海世博会世博轴雕塑展，2009年中国北京今日美术馆的 “运动的张力”， 2007年台北当代美术馆的 “流行的意外”，2006年大都会博物馆 “匙－中国当代艺术” 等。
Sui Jianguo (b. 1956 in Qingdao, Shandong) received a BA in the Fine Arts Department from the Shandong University of Arts in 1984 and an MA in the Sculpture Department from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989, where he currently presides as the head of the Sculpture Department.
Sui Jianguo’s art explores his unique understanding and approach to creation, form, unconventional media, alternative methods, and spatial temporality. Critics have praised him for being a “pioneer venturing to the farthest reaches of Chinese sculpture.” His sculptures are ingenious fusions of concept and form, as many of his works utilize large-scale force to impact viewers. Sui’s early work carries strong symbolic content, most of which carefully relates the peculiarities of society and history. His later creations gradually became disconnected from his own identity and began incorporating a larger visual angle, thus making his concepts of cultural space and time apparent. Sui’s work also succeeds in bringing forth introspection concerning the artistic process in modern China. Both the realism in his early works and the classic shapes in his later Mao Jacket and Dinosaur pieces, rely on the wisdom of native Chinese genealogy and channels of culture to serve as outlets for solving social problems. The work reveals an academic’s severely critical standpoint regarding society and human morality. His works also delve into video and public performance.
He has participated in many international group and solo exhibitions at such institutions as Museum Beeldenaan Zee, The Hague, The Netherlands; Today Art Museum, Beijing, China; Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, Taiwan; Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Manila, The Philippines; as well as the 2010 World Expo, Shanghai, China.
