Yokohama Triennale is an important contemporary art expo in Japan, it is also one of most important Triennale in Asia. The Sixth Yokohama Triennale opened on August 4. Chinese artist Dong Yuan was invited to exhibit her installation painting “Grandmother’s House” in Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No.1. This is the third time the artwork was exhibited overseas following 2014 Art 14 in London and Busan Biennale.
Those works range in size, the bigger ones are 2-3 meters, the small ones are only a few centimeters, they are paintings of the everyday home appliances and household pieces. Layer upon layer, they depict a standard and average home in Northern China, this is Dong Yuan’s “Grandmother’s House”.
“I had formed this method in my mind when I was at school. I would start with the bigger pieces, and adhere the smaller pieces onto it, afterwards my approach changed. In the beginning, everything was on a flat surface, and now I have integrated specific furniture pieces. Yet, they are still very layered, and they remain the same size as the actual items, and are placed in their true positions.”
“I like grandmother’s house very much, but the house will be demolished soon, so I decided to document them, this for me is something meaningful. Photographs of the actual items in my grandmother’s house were taken in their actual positions, the toffee apple that I bought for my grandmother, which was not yet finished and was placed in a bowl, as well as the apple that I had taken a couple bites out of. As long as they were the items in her house, I would first photograph them, then measure them individually, and then make canvases according to their actual sizes.”
“Home for me is something that I cannot keep onto, and I know I shall have to move to a new place soon, by painting everything in the house means that I have lived here, and that I once kept ahold of the place… this is quite important to me, if I can’t afford to buy a house, I can at least paint one.” – Dong Yuan
About 2017 Yokohama Triennale
The 2017 Yokohama Triennale was held in Yokohama Art Museum and Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No.1 over the duration of 88 days. The curatorial team consisted of Aisaka Eriko, Director of Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, Miki Aikiko, Art Director of Benesse Art Site Naoshima, and Kashiwagi Tomoh, Chief Curator of Yokohama Art Museum. The curatorial team aims to explore the future possibilities of international art expos through creating a space where “Sharing and Coexistence” can integrate with dialogue and discussion, thus reaching out beyond the limitations of visual experience.
The theme of this year’s Triennale is – “Islands, Constellations and Galapagos”, it addresses the concept of “re-analyzing the globalized connectivity and isolation through a multitude of perceptions”. Works in diverse media by approximately 40 artists or groups from Japan and the world are exhibited. It resembles an aggregation of small solo exhibitions by a smaller-than-usual number of carefully selected artists, with many of them showing multiple works. This is intended to give the viewers a deeper understanding of individual artists’ creative worlds, and at the same time, to embody the image of these worlds gradually connecting like stars or islands forming constellations and archipelagoes.
